Normally we make two styles of Tempranillo: a light, juicy, red fruited and spicy style of Tempranillo from our own vines here in Bowral (Winery Block Tempranillo); and a more robust style (Reserve Tempranillo) with significantly more ripeness and weight from Central Ranges, NSW (Ben and James Crossings’ Angullong vineyard, at 660m altitude).
This is the same vineyard that supplies our Reserve Shiraz, Shiraz Viognier, Barbera. You can see the warm, sunny vineyard climate in these wines, particularly the 2016 vintage, however the 660m elevation allows an elegance to shine through.
The complex nose reveals aromas of cola and ripe black fruits, dark olive, and spiced oak.
The palate has great richness and ripeness, with the typical ripeness and structure we get from this vineyard.
The Tempranillo tannins are there, but this vintage they are very ripe and smooth with a slight savoury edge, begging for beef and lamb.
This wine will gain even more harmony in time - put 6 in the rack and try one each 6 -10 months.
Great with roast beef and lamb.
Drink now to 2024.
