The 2017 Reserve Chardonnay was grown at an elevated vineyard in Tumberumba, NSW. The growing season was quite mild with cooler conditions than average producing bright, pristine fruit flavours and excellent natural acid retention.
The grapes were wholebunch pressed directly to barrel for wild fermentation of high solids juice in top quality French oak barrels. A small portion was settled before transferring to barrel.
After 5 days the wild yeast started fermenting and within 3 weeks the wine was dry.
This is the sort of modern Australian chardonnay that excites me – there is a lot going on here with pure grapefruit and mineral, beautiful integrated oak of a low toast origin (less woody), meat stock, hints of caramel and smoke, and with meal/oat/biscuit aromas from maturation on full yeast lees. Sophisticated, classy, fresh & pure.
The palate is fine, focussed and pure, with beautiful, pristine grapefruit and white peach, finishing with clean, zesty acidity. This is a chardonnay-lovers wine.
