Our 2021 Reserve Pinot Gris was made from the 457 clone of Pinot Gris grown at Tumbarunba (NSW) where it tends to produce ripe, spicy flavours and textures. It is a barrel aged style, and as such the wine is more about complexity and palate structure than fresh, bright primary fruit.
The juice was mainly fermented in 5-9 year old French oak barrels with a portion left to ferment using wild yeast (15%). 10% of the fruit was fermented on skins until dry to enhance flavour, texture and colour. The different batches rested on lees in barrel for 9 months until bottling. There is faint copper colour from the skin contact. Spiced red apple and pear aromas lead, with subtle lees aromas in the background. There are beautiful palate flavours of ripe yellow apple, juicy pear, and texture gained from maturation on lees in old barrels.
A lovely line of acid works well with the juicy textures, adding a palate cleansing and refreshing effect. Lovely cool-climate Pinot Gris. Will age well. A very easy wine to drink, pairing well with pork, chicken and richer seafood. Drink now to 2028.
